How strong do you think you are?

I’d like to introduce Michelle, this blog came about because of a post she recently put on Facebook.  I like to think of her as a friend though strictly speaking, she was my kids Crossfit coach for a few years.  I like Michelle, she is warm and caring and is passionate about her role.
Her post really resonated with me, I’ll admit it was mainly due to how she summed up her words.  The similarities were too similar to dismiss to a method that is very close to my heart.  A topic that I spend many hours a month coaching and teaching new and repeat parents alike.
You may have heard of it, it’s called Hypnobirthing, if not I urge you to take a look and spread the love.

Having taught Hypnobirthing for over five years, I have seen it become increasingly more popular and featured in the public eye.  I quietly smile to myself and allow a little “told you so” moment.  Some people enquire because they have heard of this new “kid on the block antenatal class” but actually it is already well into its double figures since its fruition.  We know things take time to catch hold and I think we have finally reached that firm hold.
Hypnobirthing is here to stay, why?
Well let me share Michelle’s post first:

I remember shouting ‘I NEED TO DROP IT!’…
N shouting ‘DON’T DROP IT!’ ……
I shout back ‘OK’, I soldier on

My aim for this competition was to get to the end of each workout and literally have given it everything I had (I am renowned for pacing everything, tortoise speed and don’t ever push
myself to the point of discomfort). Well, I totally nailed that goal!

After this picture, you would have found me sat, just staring into space, a sweaty mess, unable to talk, with legs that were made of jelly.

I can look back at this picture and laugh at my face but know that at this exact moment I literally wanted to quit!

I didn’t!

As someone who always tends to underestimate my own capability in lots of things, I learnt something very important…

Dig deep, grit your teeth, find people that have your back and know that you are bigger than the mountain you have to climb.

So Michelle has nailed what Hypnobirthing is.  She wasn’t birthing but the physical effort of anything that pushes our boundaries and the willpower required to succeed needs a strong healthy mind.
Sure being physically fit and strong can go along way and yes there are a few women who can not birth due to perhaps medical or physical aspects but the vast majority do.
However, never underestimate the power of the mind.  It is the difference between succeeding and failing.

Absolutely I hear you say but birth doesn’t always go to plan!
Yes, you are right, it can take many twists and turns and sometimes our wishes don’t play out.  But, with a strong mind, an understanding of birth physiology, the science and being truly informed about choices you can overcome these obstacles and still achieve a positive outcome for yourself.

So if you are pregnant or know someone who is pregnant please point them to this article or give Hypnobirthing a mention.  I have yet to come across anyone who hasn’t found this method useful.
